The Big Picture

Archie carried out a 5-week placement with biomass-energy company Castle European Limited in summer 2015. He researched the benefits and disadvantages of different renewable-energy sources for production within the European Union.

“I’m pretty proud of the work I did there and I get the impression that it went well and actually did really help them out. I believe in what they’re doing and I’m excited to see where it goes for them and to be a part of that is really, really exciting.”

In Archie’s Own Words…

It was really exciting really. They’re implementing groundbreaking technology which could come to light in the next year or so. If I hear about that then and hear that I’ve worked for that company that’s made such a huge impact that’s really exciting for me as such a young person for my first work experience. I worked for a company called Castle European Ltd, a small business that specialises in renewable energy sources and they believe they’ve created groundbreaking technology which they intend to implement in the Western Balkans. So I was doing a research-based project where I was basically comparing different types of renewable energy, advantages and disadvantages, and then how I think it will be implemented as part of the EU’s future. There’s a lot of theory in physics but actually the application bit comes from real-world experience and you also realise how many different things you have to consider, for example political, economic, social implications of what the technology is that you’re making.

Because I was working in the office with some pretty senior people in the company I got to hear a lot about what the company was about… So things like listening in to phone calls, having conversations with these people that are clearly very intelligent and very experienced, and it gave me confidence. I mean I went into a place that was completely unknown to me with people who have been working for years on various things, had a lot of experience, and I managed it and I produced a good report and the presentation that I did at the end went well and it shows that I can react to situations and sort of deal with them and actually enjoy them and feel comfortable and learn from them in that way.

I’m pretty proud of the work I did there and I get the impression that it went well and actually did really help them out. I believe in what they’re doing and I’m excited to see where it goes for them and to be a part of that is really, really exciting.

Professional Skills

Archie did use some of the theory from his physics degree in his placement, but he learned that there were a lot more things to consider when making decisions other than scientific facts.

The Next Step

Archie graduated with an MPhys degree in June 2018. He is now studying for a PhD in theoretical particle physics at Imperial College London.
